Hyperacute and Acute

London Health Sciences Centre – University Hospital (UH) is both the Regional Centre for the Southwestern Ontario Stroke Network, the tertiary and endovascular therapy (EVT) centre for the South West Local Health Integration Network, and the district stroke centre for London Middlesex Oxford.  It provides specialized services for the hyperacute and acute components of the continuum of stroke care for stroke survivors in the district. These include the administration of tPA for eligible candidates, neurosurgery, and comprehensive, interdisciplinary care on hyperacute and acute stroke units.

Secondary Stroke Prevention

The Urgent TIA and Carotid Endartectomy Clinics are also housed at UH. The Urgent TIA Clinic offers rapid access to stroke neurologists, specialized diagnostics, and intervention for those suspected of having a transient ischemic attack or non-disabling stroke. Serving the South West LHIN, the Carotid Endartectomy Clinic streamlines access to surgeons to be assessed for carotid revascularization surgery (endartectomy or stenting).

Rehabilitation

Like UH, Parkwood Institute is both the Regional Centre and a designated stroke centre for rehabilitation in London Middlesex Oxford. Here, rehabilitation is provided on a dedicated and specialized stroke rehabilitation unit by a full interdisciplinary team with expertise in stroke care.

Woodstock Hospital (WH) is the second designated stroke centre for rehabilitation in London Middlesex Oxford Stroke District. WH clusters stroke patients on its general rehabilitation unit and care is provided by a full interdisciplinary team with expertise in stroke care.

Outpatient rehabilitation is available through the Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation Program (CORP) at Parkwood Institute and the Intensive Rehabilitation Outpatient Program (IROP) at Woodstock Hospital.

The Community Stroke Rehabilitation Team (CSRT), operated out of Parkwood Institute, offers specialized, interdisciplinary stroke rehabilitation within the home and community.

Aphasia groups are available through both Western University Speech Language Pathology Services and Dale Brain Injury Services.

The March of Dimes Canada supports two stroke survivor support groups in London, one of which is for young stroke survivors.

VON Oxford offers a specialized “Stroke Day” to provide slower-paced rehabilitation for those individuals who have finished active rehabilitation. This transitional and goal-directed program occurs once a week in Woodstock. It is supported by the CSRT, with some programming being supported by IROP. Clients for the program are to be initially seen by the CSRT.
